The Marketing Unicorn

In my first marketing job interview, the employer asked me what I knew about marketing. I did not know very much at the time. He said, “No one is a marketing unicorn.” By that he meant, no one knows how to do all the different aspects of marketing. At that moment all I thought was, “but I want to be a unicorn.”

Well, two years and a lot more experience later, here I am, The Marketing Unicorn. I’m joking. Well, I’m half-joking. Only at this point can I say that I am a full, one-stop-shop, marketing person. But I’m not perfect and I’m still learning. I’m an aspiring Marketing Unicorn.

Now, I realize this all might sound crazy and very strange. In the marketing world, it’s full of agencies and freelancing specialists. But everyone is more than that one job title they give themselves. Marketing Unicorns exist. You just have to know where to look.

Am I a website developer? No. Am I an SEO Specialist? Maybe not.

BUT I know a little bit about everything.

Have I built a website? Yes. Have I run Google Ads campaigns? Yes. Have I done a lot more? Yes yes yes.

When I say my age, people usually laugh at me because what can I know as a 24-year-old? Well to start, I know enough to recognize that laughing at someone’s age is really rude. And I know that I’m confident in my marketing ability.

Will I ever be a Marketing Unicorn? I hope so. I’m really working on getting there. I’m soaking up every ounce of education I can get from my jobs so I can be a master of it all.

What can I do?

LOTS.

Age is just a number. Besides, who cares about the age when you’re a unicorn? Or I guess in my case, an aspiring unicorn.

Why hire a Marketing Unicorn?

4 words, BANG FOR YOUR BUCK. Why outsource to 5 people when you can have one person understand your brand well and execute the items you want. You can build so much more trust when you have a Marketing Unicorn. Plus, it’s easier to negotiate with one person as opposed to a team, it’s easier to communicate, and it’s faster to pull things together.

There’s a lot of people that want to cast doubt on marketers. Results aren’t always instant and it’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work. So I challenge you, if someone doubts you, prove them wrong. If you’re hiring someone, actually READ THEIR RESUME. You might have just met a f*cking unicorn.
